Marshall Amplification is synonymous with guitar amplifiers since 1962, and its
\nofferings are still as relevant today as they were back then \u2013 and just as
\npopular. When it comes to audio it\u2019s fair to say that Marshall knows a thing or
\ntwo and Marshall\u2019s state-of-the-art recording and mixing studio is a testament
\nto their expertise. However, creating the perfect studio wasn\u2019t straightforward,
\neven for experts like Marshall.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think anyone at Marshall, including myself, had any idea of… just how
\nmuch is involved in building a world-class recording studio\u201d, said Adam Beer,
\nStudio Manager at Marshall. What complicated the build over and above the
\nnormal difficulties was the installation of a vintage Neve 8048 console.
\nMarshall\u2019s Neve is a classic 70\u2019s desk that provides warmth, clarity, and that
\nsought-after Neve sound. It was originally in the Path\u00e9 Marconi Studio D in
\nParis.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201c[When we got the Neve] we split the console in two, the patch bay at the end
\nbecame the centre. This enables you to have Pro Tools, your mouse and your
\nkeyboard looking straight at the console\u201d, Adam continues.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Arranging it like this] meant we were able to then add that ginormous patch
\nbay next to our lovely RedNet system on the side. It’s two consoles that mix
\ntogether, which means that it sounds like nothing you’ve heard before. Drums
\nand guitars absolutely sing through it. It’s a real marvel. And the fact that it’s
\nbeen completely rebuilt by an expert means that every single part of it works.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore the RedNet R1, I would have a talkback mic in my makeshift control
\nroom to make sure I could talk to the talent and let them know that we\u2019re
\nrolling and stuff like that. With the R1, that\u2019s got four different talkback
\nroutings. So, when we do a shoot now, I\u2019ve got a talkback to the band with the
\nindividual headphone boxes, I\u2019ve got one routed for the label, I\u2019ve got a<\/p>\n

talkback to the video crew and I\u2019m using the R1 as my main headphone
\namplifier – and it\u2019s a really powerful, good-sounding headphone amp.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Neve console is the centrepiece of the studio, but that\u2019s not all the vintage
\nequipment that Marshall use.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot only have we got the usual things: LA2As, 1176s, but we’ve got some
\nreally special BBC Neve compressors with passive 320 millisecond delays in
\nthem. We use them all the time and it makes everything sound massive. We’ve
\ngot a couple of PYE compressors that Blake made himself from broadcast PYEs,
\nwhich are really amazing. We’ve got all this wonderful gear, but we use it with
\nthe RedNet into Pro Tools Ultimate, and that really gives us the flexibility to
\nuse the vintage gear in a really tasteful way.\u201d<\/p>\n

As well as an impressive list of equipment, Marshall Studio offers a fantastic
\nrange of facilities. \u201cThe building itself is not just your usual recording studio.
\nIt\u2019s got a huge live room, a huge live space for 250 people\u201d says Adam.
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a fully licensed bar and a wonderful new room upstairs, which is used
\nas an artists’ development space and a mix room.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making everything work flawlessly over such a comprehensive studio layout is
\nkey to the success of the Marshall Studio. Four Focusrite RedNet A16R, six
\nFocusrite RedNet AM2 and two Focusrite RedNet HD32Rs are used to power
\nthe system.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI had no prior experience of RedNet before I started here, and it is definitely a
\nstory of conversion. I thought, \u2018Well, I’ll give it a go, I mean, I’ve heard good
\nthings about this RedNet system,\u2019 and honestly, I’ve been blown away\u201d says
\nAdam.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us, the most important thing is the conversion. The greatest compliment I
\ncan give to the Focusrite conversion is, I don’t ever worry about it or notice it.
\nEverything we do here has the lovely, warm Neve punch. The microphones,
\neverything sounds great, because the conversion is great. It’s really been
\ninstrumental in us maintaining the wonderful Neve sound that we want to
\nhave here, and the added bonus of course, is the Dante. Having the Dante
\ncapability has meant that we are able to have some Martin Audio speakers in
\nthe roof of the live room for playback.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marshall uses Martin Audio Blackline X10s and a Martin Audio iKON iK81 for
\nthe live room, primarily because a Martin Audio Dante amplifier could be used
\nfor playback.<\/p>\n

Adam continues \u201cIt\u2019s been the perfect solution for us. We\u2019ve got ceiling
\nspeakers out in the foyer by the bar area that are Dante enabled, it means we
\ncan share what we’re doing in the control room with people that perhaps are
\noutside of the control room having a drink, members of the band. Once we
\ndiscovered the options it [Dante] gave us, it’s been a fantastic piece of
\ntechnology that’s really helped us make this place as multifunctional as it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe future of the studio really is just to continue making great records in the
\nstudio, not just for ourselves, but for other companies and other producers\u201d
\ncomments Steve Tannett, Musical Director of Marshall Amplification.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe built it to be exactly what it is, a world-class recording studio. If an artist
\nor a producer wants to use the studio, it’s as simple as just calling us and
\nsaying, “Are you available on such and such a date?”\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur expansion is really just to continue churning out amazing quality music
\nfrom this recording studio. As long as everyone who comes into Marshall to
\nrecord leaves with the sense that they’ve had the best possible time, with the
\nbest possible people, and get the best possible result \u2014 that’s our mission.\u201d<\/p>\n
